The one productivity hack Elon Musk got wrong
Recently, Elon Musk sent a company-wide email to Tesla employees sharing a number of updates as well as his frustration on numerous fronts, which he plans to remedy in the coming weeks and months. The email has since been leaked, reposted, and referenced ad nauseam. While most of the content was directed at Tesla, there were a number of productivity hacks that Musk shared which have now gone viral. These hacks, especially the ones related to meetings, have media outlets and bloggers praising Musk for actually saying what theyve always wanted to: meetings are a waste of time. We need less of them. And when we do meet, it should be better organized, more efficient, and we all should be more engaged. And although I agree with most of Muskââ¬â¢s sentiments, there is one that I think he got wrong: Walk out of a meeting or drop off a call as soon as it is obvious you arenââ¬â¢t adding value. It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time. Elon Musk, CEO Co-Founder, Tesla Inc., Company-wide email, 4/17/18 Listen, I hate meetings as much as anyone. And I am constantly searching for ways to make them more productive. But this little tidbit of wisdom isnââ¬â¢t the way to do it. In fact, it does the exact opposite. Whats the surest way to show contempt for your colleagues? Walking out of a meeting. Unless, of course, it is an actual emergency and youve discretely told someone that you need to go. But to simply leave a meeting because you dont feel youre adding value is not only disruptive and disrespectful, it signals that you think your time is more valuable than everyone elseââ¬â¢s in the room. In addition, it also displays an extreme amount of arrogance and an unwillingness to learn. Surely you wouldnââ¬â¢t have been invited to the meeting unless the organizer believed you could add value or learn something by attending. The notion that you should just get up and walk out if you donââ¬â¢t feel you can contribute is counterproductive. To simply leave a meeting because you feel you canââ¬â¢t add value is not only disruptive and disrespectful, it signals that you think your time is more valuable than everyone elseââ¬â¢s. Global business demands protocol, sensitivity, and respect Having had the privilege of working for and with several transformative global leaders throughout my career, I cannot imagine any of them abruptly walking out of a meeting unless an emergency dictated. Conducting business globally involves having an intimate understanding of and appreciation for your relationships. It requires sensitivity and respect for protocol and unwritten rulesââ¬âall of which vary in intensity depending on where you are and the industry youre engaged in. When it comes to observing these protocols, dignity and respect should be projected in every aspect of how a meeting is arranged, conducted, and concluded. Protocol matters. Showing respect for others matters. And the potential for offense extends beyond the cross-cultural. Theres a further disadvantage if you are a female executive who does this. Women at work are prejudged and misjudged more harshly for all our actions and interactions, big and small. This is especially true in Silicon Valley, where we are few and far between in the leadership ranks. If we started abruptly leaving every meeting where we werenââ¬â¢t sure about the value we could add, we may miss the rare leadership opportunities when they present themselves (not to mention the negative blowback from peers who would misread our intentions). Dignity and respect should be projected in every aspect of how a meeting is arranged, conducted, and concluded. Protocol matters. Meetings are an opportunity to find out where you can add value or learn something from your colleagues.à But can there be less of them and can they be run better? Absolutely. My favorite meeting and team productivity hacks I appreciate Muskââ¬â¢s emphasis on direct communication, limiting excessive meetings, and eliminating acronyms. In addition, here are some of my favorite productivity hacks to increase efficiency and engagement in meetings. 1. Pre-work A few days before a big meeting, or even a week prior for global teams, try having one or two pre-work homework questions.à These should get people thinking ahead of time and increase their engagement in the meeting itself. I am consistently amazed at the number and quality of the ideas that come forth when people simply take a few minutes to focus on the concepts we are engaging with prior to coming together. I have also found that this is the best way to increase accountability from the entirety of a team, because everyone is being asked to contribute and share their ideas. I have sometimes expanded this to include an anonymous survey that people complete prior to a meeting. This is helpful if we are discussing anything sensitiveââ¬âlike HR, security concerns, diversity, inclusion, or gender equality efforts. This allows for unfiltered and specific feedback, which people would never feel comfortable sharing or discussing publicly. 2. Embedding engagement rituals If you want to increase engagement, you need to embed rituals in your meetings that will set expectations and encourage it. This can start with everyone sharing their responses to the assigned pre-work questions. Doing this does two things: One, it gets everyone to participate and engage at least at a basic level to prepare responses to your prompts. And two, it engages the introverts who may not feel comfortable jumping in. I like to start every meeting with 10 minutes of people sharing their responses to the pre-work, which gets everyone involved and engaged from the outset. Its a small investment of time that can build deeper engagement, transparency, and confidence going forward. The second engagement ritual that I like to embed and recommend to clients is toà not interrupt others when they are speaking. It is bad form to interrupt someoneââ¬âwe all know this. And yet it has become a habit to just interrupt someone at work, because we have time constraints and urgent matters to attend to. I get it, and I appreciate that we canââ¬â¢t let everyone drone on and on. But if we all tried to limit our interrupting, not only would it increase engagement because people feel fully heard, but you also might be surprised by what you hear when you let someone complete a full thought. Just something to consider. 3. Limit all technology and enforce a take-notes-on-paper policy One of the biggest complaints I get from my clients is how unproductive their meetings are because people are distracted by doing other thingsââ¬âon their phones, laptops, tablets, etc. When I hold my masterclasses and seminars in companies, I share my policy for only taking handwritten notes. This is the same policy I enforce for all the grad courses I teach at Hult International Business School. There are countless neuroscience studies that show we engage a larger, different part of the brain when we put pen to paper. Not only does note-taking increase oneââ¬â¢s retention, creativity, and ability to actively listen, it also increases oneââ¬â¢s situational awareness, which is essential to read the environment and adapt effectively. Taking it a step furtherââ¬âand as someone who has a Moleskine journal in hand at all timesââ¬âyou can find a great referenceà for hacking your note-taking to increase productivityà here. The above three hacks are tried-and-tested with my global clients. I look forward to hearing your favorite hacks and recommendations, too. This is an area where we can always improve. Sample Common Application Essay Learn from Failure
The following sample essay responds to the 2019-20 Common Application Prompt #2: The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? Read a critique of this essay to learn strategies and tips for writing your own. Richards Common Application Essay on Failure Striking Out Ive played baseball ever since I could remember, but somehow, at fourteen, I still wasnt very good at it. Youd think that ten years of summer leagues and two older brothers whod been the stars of their teams would have rubbed off on me, but youd be wrong. I mean, I wasnt completely hopeless. I was pretty fast, and I could hit my oldest brothers fastball maybe three or four times out of ten, but I wasnt about to be scouted for college teams. My team that summer, the Bengals, wasnt anything special, either. We had one or two pretty talented guys, but most, like me, were just barely what you could call decent. But somehow wed almost scraped through the first round of playoffs, with only one game standing between us and semifinals. Predictably, the game had come down to the last inning, the Bengals had two outs and players on second and third base, and it was my turn at bat. It was like one of those moments you see in movies. The scrawny kid who no one really believed in hits a miraculous home run, winning the big game for his underdog team and becoming a local legend. Except my life wasnt The Sandlot, and any hopes my teammates or coach mightve had for a last-minute rally to victory were crushed with my third swing-and-miss when the umpire sent me back to the dugout with a strike three - youre out! I was inconsolably angry with myself. I spent the entire car ride home tuning out my parents words of consolation, replaying my strike-out over and over in my head. For the next few days I was miserable thinking about how, if it hadnt been for me, the Bengals might have been on their way to a league victory, and nothing anyone said could convince me that the loss wasnt on my shoulders. About a week later, some of my friends from the team got together at the park to hang out. When I arrived, I was a little surprised that no one seemed to be mad at me - after all, Id lost us the game, and they had to be disappointed about not making it to the semifinals. It wasnt until we split into teams for an impromptu pickup game that I started to realize why no one was upset. Maybe it was the excitement of reaching the playoffs or the pressure of living up to my brothers examples, but sometime during that game, Id lost sight of why most of us played summer league baseball. It wasnt to win the championship, as cool as that would have been. It was because we all loved to play. I didnt need a trophy or a Hollywood come-from-behind win to have fun playing baseball with my friends, but maybe I needed to strike out to remember that. A Critique of Richards Essay A lot can be learned from Richards writing by looking at all of its pieces. By thinking objectively about another persons essay, you will be better off when it comes time to write your own because you will understand what admissions officers are looking for. Title Striking Out isnt an overly clever title, but it gets the job done. It tells you that you are about to read an essay about failure and baseball. A good titleà summarizes an essay and intrigues its readers but focus more on an appropriate title than on an interesting one. Language and Tone Richard leans into informal language such as I mean and youd think to make his essay conversational and friendly. He introduces himself as an unimpressive athlete who doesnt quite measure up to his brothers, this humility making him more relatable to his readers. While this level of informality is not preferred by all colleges, most are looking to learn as much about your personality as possible. Richards easy tone accomplishes this. The language of the essay is also tight and engaging. Each sentence gets a point across and Richard is economical with his use of words to clearly convey the setting and situation. College admissions officers are likely to appreciate the overall clarity and meticulousness of Richards essay. Richard establishes and maintains a self-deprecating and humble voice throughout his writing His willingness to be honest about his shortcomings shows that he is sure of himself and also tells colleges that he has a healthy self-concept and isnt afraid of failing. By not boasting about athletic prowess, Richard demonstrates a valuable quality of self-assuredness that colleges admire. Focus College admissions officers read many essays about sports, especially from applicants that are more interested in playing sports at college than getting an education. In fact, one of the topà 10 bad essay topicsà is the hero essay in which an applicant brags about making a goal that won their team the championship. Self-congratulatory essays have the effect of distancing you from the authentic qualities of successful college students and are therefore never a good idea. Richards essay has nothing to do with heroism. He is not claiming to be a star or over-inflating his abilities and his honesty is refreshing. His essay perfectly satisfies every aspect of the prompt by presenting a clear moment of failure and a significant lesson learned without blowing his accomplishments out of proportion. He managed to take the clichà © topic of sports and turn it on its head, which admissions officers are much more likely to respect. Audience Richards essay would be appropriate in most but not all situations. If he were hoping to play a sport competitively for a college, this would be the wrong essay. It would not impress NCAA scouts or make him likely to be recruited. This essay would be best for universities more interested in his personality than his baseball skills. Any college looking for mature, self-aware applicants with affable personalities would be drawn to Richards story of failure. A Final Word Always keep in mind that the purpose of the Common Application essay is for colleges to learn who you are. While gradesà and test scores will be considered, admissions offices will also be using more subjective andà holisticà information about what you are like as a person. Richard succeeds in making a good impression by being a strong and engaging writer with a positive sense of self. Most would agree that he seems like the type of student who would be a useful addition to the campus community. While the essay is successful, keep in mind that your own essay needs to have nothing in common with this sample and you should not use it as a model. There are innumerable ways to approach the idea of a challenge, setback, or failure and your essay needs to be true to your own experiences and personality.

Human Trafficking And The United Nations Office On Drugs...
Human trafficking and smuggling has been in existence across the world for thousands of years. While both of these issues deserve equal public awareness, they are very different from one another. The United Nations office reveals consent, exploitation and transnationality are the most important differences (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Web). From ancient Greek to medieval times, up until today, both physical and sexual slavery is commonly used. Humans all over the world are trapped in lives of enigma, beaten and mistreated until eventually forced to work under extreme measures to illegally and unwillingly provide for others. From illicitly bringing drugs in and out of different countries, to transporting and controlling humans actions and whereabouts, the smuggling industry has taken a big toll on the US (Timeline of Human Trafficking. Web). Many personal accounts of both human trafficking and smuggling have been taken into account and wrote about, one being the true story of a Cambodian Heroine. Human Trafficking is the threat or use of force, coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power or vulnerability, or giving payments or benefits to a person in control of the victim (HumanTrafficking.org: A Web Resource for Combating Human Trafficking in the East Asia Pacific Region. Patients With Alzheimer s Disease - 1018 Words
I would advocate for patients with Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease. According to Burns and Iliffe (2009), Alzheimerââ¬â¢s is a ââ¬Å"chronic progressive neurodegenerative disorderâ⬠that is characterized primarily by symptoms of memory loss (p. 467). Those affected with this disorder often have behavioral and psychiatric disturbances and problems with activities of daily living. Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease destroys the nerve cells and tissues in the brain; in advanced stages, the brain shrinks a drastic amount. The Alzheimerââ¬â¢s Association (n.d.) states that this disease ââ¬Å"remains one of the most critical public health issues in America.â⬠Alzheimerââ¬â¢s patientsââ¬â¢ overall health is at risk. Because this disease affects the brain, several cognitive functions areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦According to Hoyert and Rosenberg (1997), Alzheimerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"complicates [the] treatment of other medical conditionsâ⬠(p. 112). Patientââ¬â¢s behavior is sometimes unpredictable, which can make it difficult for health care providers to provide quality care. The patient may be willing to participate in a particular health related action and then suddenly be very resistant. It may be hard for healthcare providers to create a health plan that patients will consistently follow. Patients with Alzheimerââ¬â¢s may also forget to take a medication that may be necessary to the treatment of illness. Alzheimerââ¬â¢s patients overall sense of well-being is also at risk. According to Burkhardt Nathaniel (2007), dementia ââ¬Å"often causes emotion, relational, and financial strain for the [patients and] ca regiversâ⬠(p. 436). Caring for patients with dementia can be very stressful, and if families feel that they cannot properly care for the affected patient, they may send them to a long-term care facility. Burns and Iliffe (2009) suggest that sudden changes in the living environment can agitate behavioral symptoms of the disease. The patient is then at an increased risk for feelings of ââ¬Å"social isolationâ⬠(Burkhardt Nathaniel, 2007, p. 436) and depression (Burns Iliffe, 2009, p. 471). When I was a young child, I saw the effects of this illness on my entire family as my great-grandmother suffered from Alzheimerââ¬â¢s. In high school, I volunteered at a nursing home in the Alzheimerââ¬â¢s and
Walter Cunningham Sr. to Kill a Mockingbird free essay sample
Hey, my nameââ¬â¢s Walter Cunningham Sr. I am not respected in the eyes of Maycomb. Itââ¬â¢s mainly cause Iââ¬â¢m poor. Poor people like me are usually not respected by others. Mr. Finch respects me and my entire family because we understand the difference between right and wrong. It first started when I was going with the mob to lynch Tom Robinson. Little Jean Louise came up to and tell me what I was doing was wrong. I realized what she was talking about so I decided not to go lynch Tom. I also realized that Tom wasnââ¬â¢t guilty but who would listen to someone low in the eyes of the townspeople. The next day was the trial. Mr. Finch had fought a brilliant case. His part was done now it was upon the jury members and Judge Taylor to decide is Tom was guilty. The only reason it took the jury so long to decide whether Tom was guilty or not was because of my double first cousin. We will write a custom essay sample on Walter Cunningham Sr. to Kill a Mockingbird or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page My cousin was the only one who was supporting Mr. Robinson. My cousin had seen the difference between right and wrong. They knew it was wrong for Mr. Robinson to be declared guilty. They also knew they had to do something on their own. They tried and tried and tried but couldnââ¬â¢t succeed mainly because black peoples arenââ¬â¢t favored over whites even if the white man or woman is wrong and secondly because we arenââ¬â¢t respected enough for people to believe us. I do believe that marriage and other things shouldnââ¬â¢t be accepted between blacks and whites but I also believe that the truth shouldnââ¬â¢t be decided by what color the person is. It should be decided on evidence. Mr. Finch knows that he dinââ¬â¢t succeed in saving Tom Robinson and his family but we all know that he tried his hardest. Maycomb can become righteous with people like Mr. Finch leading the way. I have a strong feeling that Mr. Finch will eventually make Maycomb a righteous and just place. I know this process has begun because us Cunninghamsââ¬â¢ and Ms. Alexandra have put our faith on you. Mr. Finch, the Cunninghamsââ¬â¢ will always support you because we know and believe you will always show us the difference between the right and the wrong.
